    Soft gluons at large angles in hadron collisions

    A general discussion is presented of the single logarithmic soft factor that appears in two scale QCD observables in processes involving four partons. We treat it as the ``fifth form factor'', accompanying the four collinear singular Sudakov form factors attached to colliding and outgoing hard partons. The fifth form factor is expressed in terms of the Casimir operators (squared colour charges) of irreducible representations in the crossing tt- and uu-channels. As an application we revisit the problem of large angle radiation in gg→gggg\to gg and give a relatively simple solution and interpretation of the results. We found an unexpected symmetry of the soft anomalous dimension under exchange of internal and external variables of the problem whose existence calls for explanation.Comment: 29 pages, pictures generated with feynmf graphic packag

    Comments on the observation of high multiplicity events at the LHC

    We analyze the structure of the high multiplicity events observed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. We argue that the bulk of the observed correlations is due to the production of a pair of jets with p_t > 15 GeV/c. We also suggest that high multiplicity events are due to a combination of three effects: high underlying multiplicity for collisions at small impact parameters, upward fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding protons, and production of hadrons in the fragmentation of dijets. The data analysis is suggested which may clarify the underlying dynamics of the high multiplicity events and probe fluctuations of the gluon field as a function of x.Comment: 8 pages, final version published in Phys.Rev.     Generalizing the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions to the Smallest x Values

    An approach which unifies the Double Logarithmic Approximation at small x and the leading order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x is presented. This approach reproduces exactly the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, but is more complete due to the degrees of freedom given to the quark sector and the inclusion of the fixed order terms. We find that data from the largest x values to the peak region can be better fitted than with other approaches.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Rapidity distribution of particle multiplicity in DIS at small x

    Analytical study of the rapidity distribution of the final state particles in deep inelastic scattering at small x is presented. We separate and analyse three sources of particle production: fragmentation of the quark-antiquark pair, accompanying coherent soft gluon radiation due to octet color exchange in the t-channel, and fragmentation of gluons that form parton distribution functions. Connection to Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) equations and the role of gluon reggezation are also discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 Figures.
